Statement from Governor Jan Brewer - Honoring a Great Generation on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

Statement

"On Sunday, we take time to remember the thousands of brave Americans injured or killed in the surprise attack on the United States at Pearl Harbor 73 years ago.

"I have been tremendously blessed during my lifetime to visit and thank many of the men and women who have served or are currently serving in our nation's armed forces. Meeting the survivors of that fateful December day -- and the heroes who unflinchingly answered the call of duty to defend freedom and protect democracy throughout the world during World War II -- has been an honor I will always cherish.

"It is with the utmost pride and privilege that I am able to again commemorate this poignant anniversary from the memorial site of the battleship named for our great state -- the USS Arizona -- and to pay tribute to her crew.

"As we remember those we lost at Pearl Harbor and throughout World War II, we should also recognize and remember those who continue to serve admirably. Let us keep in our thoughts and prayers the men and women, and their families, who continue to defend our lives and liberties at home and abroad.

"In honor of the more than 2,500 Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice at Pearl Harbor, I have ordered that flags at all state buildings be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset Sunday, December 7, 2014."
